THE LONGEST WAVE Film Review – Loneliness of the Long-Distance Surfer

Filmmaker Joe Berlinger documents the loneliness of the long-distance surfer in this profile of champion windsurfer Robby Naish, as he attempts to ride the longest waves in the world.

Audiences unfamiliar with water sports may be encountering Robbie Naish for the first time in the new documentary The Longest Wave. The film starts off with a handsome, 50-something Naish in impressive health, driving an oversize SUV to an oversize home overlooking the gorgeous Hawaiian coastline. After a primer on his successes as a competitive windsurfer and gifted waterman, Naish may appear to have it all.

That’s why it’s surprising that just a few minutes later, we find him living alone in his surf shack, estranged from his wife and family, struggling with an unnamed business challenge, and nursing a serious injury that may keep him out of the water for almost a year. How could such an impressive athlete have fallen so far?

Life is like surfing

The film doesn’t have all the answers, but it does offer an exhilarating and introspective journey as Naish tries to make his comeback. We travel to the shores of Namibia, Germany, Peru, and other exotic destinations, witness some epicsurfing, and meet many of the great watermen --and in this case they are all men-- of this era.

And why should viewers care about an aging super athlete forced to confront the demons he’s been running from all his life? Perhaps, as one fellow waterman says, to paraphrase, life is a lot like surfing. We may all need to learn how to keep paddling.

Whether Naish is overdue for redemption after a lifetime of pursuing his goals is for the viewer to decide. In the meantime, we can learn from his journey, and, as he has, enjoy the ride.

  1. Windsurfing is the grandmother of boomer generation fun sports. Like Robby Naish, who’s one of its iconic brand names, many of our cohort are still hooked to its thrills while enjoying their rides when rocking and rolling the waves. Once we really get to understanding its metaphorical quality, our search for redemption will be fulfilled. When is the longest wave finally coming to end?

    Thanks for this balanced review.
