SUZI QUATRO Film Review – Rediscovering a Rock Pioneer

A new documentary makes the case that Suzi Quatro is an artist who deserves to be be remembered as one of the great trailblazers of women on the stage.

Watch this documentary, and you too may become a Suzi Quatro fan if you weren’t already. That is, if you aren’t her sister…

Trailblazing, fearless, determined — there are many ways to describe pioneering rocker Suzi Quatro. The documentary Suzi Q, which tells the story of her 54-year career, aims to re-establish this impressive artist in the pantheon of rock greats.

SUZI Q is Story of Female Rocker Who Paved Way for Others

From the film we learn that Quatro’s rise to stardom paved the way for many better-known female acts to come. She was an idol of Joan Jett’s. She navigated a career that included musical theater, television and a triumphant comeback long before this was a standard course. The documentary makes a strong case that Quatro was a major force in rock and roll and pop culture for decades, while it tries to right the wrong that she not a household name.

With all the heart and spunk of her acolytes like Jett and the Runaways, Quatro displays a determination that sets her apart from her cohort. She left her family and bandmates to pursue a solo career, and left her country of birth (the USA) for a more promising career in the UK. Throughout her rise, she is focused on the music, avoiding the drug and party scene, and some of the cliched trappings of fame.

However, her success was not without loss. Friends she relied on to keep her grounded rejected her when she became famous, her marriage faltered, and her relationship with her family never quite recovered. The most painful moment of the movie comes when Suzi reveals she wants to be validated by the ones she loves the most — her family — and one of her sisters admits she can never truly be a fan of Suzi given their troubled past.

In this writer’s view, the best part of the documentary is getting to discover —perhaps for the first time — Quatro’s excellent body of work. She continues to record, and her latest output is just as rockin’ and catchy as ever. Audiences hungry for a deeper understanding of rock history will be thrilled with the backstory of this seminal artist, as well as the new lineup of tunes for their playlists.
