Steep Theatre Presents MOONY Review — The Truth or a Lie?

In a police station’s holding room, Austin, an officer for the small town of Moony, questions Connie who had been arrested for strange and aggressive behavior. Connie tells her story, but an unbelieving and incredulous Austin dismisses her strange tale. Throughout their tense conversation, soft, eerie music plays, foreshadowing inevitable danger. Just as Austin is at his wit’s end, we hear a crash in the distance, as if someone is trying to break into the police station.

Pure fear is in Connie’s voice as she says, “Shh…It’s too late. They’re already on my trail. I’ve been here for…It’s too late.”

Not sensing any danger, Austin is incredibly confused and on guard. It’s clear that Connie is the craziest person he’s ever met and he’s eager to get rid of her. We hear the metal of the handcuffs jangle as he takes them off her wrists.

The eerie music picks up and urgency replaces Connie’s fear when she says, “Where’s your gun? Hold on to that.”

As this 20-minute audio play progresses, we learn that Connie is hunted by another police officer—one who knows the truth of who Connie is and where she’s from. The answer isn’t as simple as we may think. As they form a reluctant relationship, Austin remains unwilling to believe Connie’s truths and Connie is determined to persuade him of it. As each minute goes by, the stakes are raised. For every earth-shattering truth that Connie reveals, danger looms closer. Eventually, Austin believes her, though it may be too late.

Steep Theatre’s Performance Keeps Us on Edge

Moony’s sound effects and original music support the dialogue, which only brings us further into the danger Connie and Austin face. Throughout the audio play, slow and quiet music plays beneath the dialogue. During a violent altercation between two characters, gunshots rattle our speakers and the once-quiet music reaches a crescendo. The ever-changing effects in Moony keep us on our toes, as if something would jump out at us if we’re not paying careful attention. Like this reviewer, you might feel as if these elements bring you to feel as if you’re journeying alongside Austin and Connie.

Moony is ideal for those looking for a spooky audio play with compelling characters and exceptional auditory elements.
