Continuing the original North American celebration of the art of Vincent Van Gogh, Pier 36 presents Immersive Van Gogh, an art installation enveloping patrons with Van Gogh’s post-Impressionist works through paintings, sculptures, animated projections, interactive technology, music, and more. This New York exhibit, one of 19 locations, is the largest iteration to-date, courtesy of Pier 36’s 70,000 square-foot space.
Creative director David Korins (Hamilton) joins the exhibit’s creator Massimiliano Siccardi and his team responsible for prior stagings of the exhibit. Korins introduces a custom exhibit design to fit the architecture of Pier 36, making use of both interior and exterior spaces and including elements previously unseen in any other venue. Highlights of the interior space include a three-dimensional depiction of The Starry Night composed of 7,500 brushes dipped in paint, along with an oversized portrait of Van Gogh himself. Korins also utilizes outdoor spaces and capitalizes on the venue’s waterfront location. Embedded within all spaces is interactive technology allowing patrons to learn more about Van Gogh, his life, his body of work, and how his work resonates with modern-day audiences, per the event spokesperson. Other original elements include tiered observation platforms, mirrored sculptures, and secret spaces for guests to discover.
Through this installation, Siccardi shares that both he and Korins wish to “pay homage to the brilliance of [Van Gogh’s] body of work, a legacy that influenced us all in our individual development as artists.”
