A celestial form--think the rings of Saturn in narrow PVC pipe--hovers over the black stage. Set around this form are: a six-foot table with chairs at each end; a small, boxy settee; and two large frames hung with diaphanous curtains. Enter the performers, Kyle Driggs and Andrea Murillo, who transport us to their lovers’ world of taunt, tease, bicker, fight, and finally engage—all expressed in flowing movement. They sit at each end of the table, physically addressing each other in turn, so without a word, you follow their narrative.
Physical Theater Festival Chicago Features First Rate Performers
Throughout EVENTIDE, whether in a pas de deux or solo, the performers engage us, humor us, amaze us. In this reviewer’s opinion, these are first rate dancers/performers committed to the small stage world of physical theater.
Eventide is a multidisciplinary piece that uses expressive movement, object manipulation, and contemporary, surreal scene-setting to expose the challenges we face in romantic relationships and relationships with ourselves.
Objects—chairs, settee, umbrella, hat, juggling bean bags—all figure in the narrative. Most enchanting perhaps is the methodical treadmill that Driggs and Murillo, solo and together, manipulate to their will but also fall prey to its relentless cycle. Murillo engages with a trapeze to a gasping audience while Driggs simultaneously keeps juggling rings in constant motion. As though one master performer isn’t enough, we feast on two.
This was their premier performance of EVENTIDE. Highly recommended for lovers of modern dance, circus performance, beauty and grace.
