Paula Cooper Gallery opens two new exhibits at their Palm Beach location: Sol LeWitt: Cubic Forms and Jennifer Bartlett: Grids & Dots.
Sol LeWitt: Cubic Forms explores the artist’s use of the cube as the base unit for a prolific body of work, including structures, drawings, prints, and photographs. In the early 1960s, opposed to the subjectivity of Expressionism, LeWitt turned to systematic geometry by devising basic sets of rules that governed the execution and design of a work of art.
Inspired by LeWitt's use of modular units and serial systems, Jennifer Bartlett creates her own art through plotting dots within a gridded matrix according to simple mathematical schemes. Exhibited alongside Sol LeWitt: Cubic Forms in Paula Cooper Gallery, Jennifer Bartlett: Grids & Dots exhibits the artist’s collection of art through the medium of steel and enamel square plates. A spokesperson for the gallery says that Bartlett’s work takes “the lessons learned from LeWitt on a very wild ride.”
