As we close in on a dense, dark forest, a boy’s voice echoes “Grandpa always says we must choose between remaining insignificant and becoming a man.” Soon after, rustling and a frantic drum beat reel us in, as a sprinting boy comes into view. Light peers in through the trees, illuminating the cool night air. The boy falls into mud, struggling to escape until he is pulled out by a Jedi. The man hands him a light saber, as they both turn with expressions of determination towards the rustling bushes that grow louder and louder.
Nova Frontier Film Festival Speaks to Our Inner Child
Vivid childhood imagination is brought to life in DOUBOUT, as we get the opportunity to see life from the perspective of young Joseph, as well as the drastically different reality he actually is confronting. Joseph refuses to accept that his brother Dorian is leaving for France. Instead, he focuses on a challenge that he can understand. Taking his grandfather’s stories to heart, Joseph becomes obsessed with the dangerous Lentikri, a red-eyed beast that roams around the forest. We are allowed a peek into young Joseph’s mind to share in his fear as he hides under the covers, overwhelmed at night by the sounds of animal cries growing louder and nearer.
This movie is recommended for its vivid capture of a child-like view of the world and demonstrating the strength of brotherly bonds in the face of real-world challenges.
