Music Theater Works Presents CAMELOT Review – A Medieval Love Triangle

A beautiful, bright, blue sky stands before us behind a castle wall and entry way. Foliage from the trees drips down creating the illusion of a forest. It feels like springtime and hope is in the air. It’s the perfect atmosphere for a love story in Camelot

Simple and Romantic at Music Theater Works

These are the two words that come into this writer’s mind watching Camelot. Arthur, played by Michael Metcalf, charms his way into Guenevere’s heart as he sings about the wonderful traits of Camelot, convincing her to marry him.

Guenevere (Christine Mayland Perkins) gets a little cheeky as she pines for the simple joys of maidenhood like knights fighting over her, or perhaps starting a war because of her. But when she marries Arthur, she devotes herself to him and listens intently as he describes his plans for the future of England.

Lancelot, played by Nathe Rowbotham, has a gleam in their eye as they sing about their desire to join the Knights of the Round Table. When he and Guenevere embrace after the jousting tournament a moment passes between them. Though he tries to deny it, he falls in love with her and they share a tender moment in If Ever Would I Leave You.

The costumes designed by Martha Shurford are also simple. The cast gathers on stage for the opening dressed in plainclothes. They open a trunk to dress Arthur in a more kingly outfit, signaling the story to begin. Throughout the show our actors add simple pieces that hint at more medieval dress—a regal cloak, a crown, and overalls as knights armor.

Idealizing England

Arthur wishes to create a civilized England where knights are not driven to fight in a rage, but rather for honor and justice. However, not everyone is thrilled about these changes.

When his illegitimate son Mordred (Parker Guidry) appears in Act II, suddenly the stage glows red. He sings to the other knights in The Seven Deadly Virtues encouraging them to remember how things used to be. Guidry bounds about the stage and soon the other knights are on his side. We fear Arthur’s new England might be in danger.

Lovely, But Subdued

The musical feels lovely and sweet as one song dips into the next and the love triangle grows between the three leads. However, for this writer it felt like a spark was missing; something that drove the intensity of this love triangle home.

For those in love with the original music, or those wanting to check this one of their list of classics to see, this would be a good fit for you. For those looking for a grander scale musical or one that draws you in with intensity, this might not be the one for you.
