In front of what is possibly the most postcard-esque home in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood (and that’s saying something!) Lynne Jordan and the Shivers inspired an entire block to fill the streets with colorful dance. With classic jazz, rock, and blues hits, Lynne and her band demonstrate how, even amidst a pandemic, communities can still connect through good music.
Singing with the voice of an angel… through a bedazzled face shield!
Many of us, including this reviewer, haven’t seen live music since the city went into covid-19 lockdown. For musical artists, the closure of venues and cancellations of events have caused months of economic hardship. For Lynne Jordan and the Shivers, however, their solution came from the community.
Lynne Jordan and the Shivers Helped by Local Music-Lovers
Local homeowners help Lynne Jordan and the Shivers by making concert venues out of front porches. They fill audience seats with camping chairs and picnic blankets. In between dance moves, masked attendees showered donation baskets with cash to help the band survive in this hard time. All walks of life (including animals!) were brought together by the band’s music.
From Aretha Franklin to David Bowie, Lynne Jordan sang her heart out to the city street. Toe-tapping was impossible to resist, and even the most reserved audience members eventually began to dance like no one was watching. Additional vocalists Isiah Mitchell and Mike Jackson helped pump up listeners with backup vocals and their own solos. The rest of the band was stationed on the porch of the house, jamming in the summer sun.
Attending a Shivers porch party makes it easy to forget how restricted life feels in the current age. Children are allowed to run around again, couples can dance holding hands, and even behind masks, anyone can see that everyone is singing along. This reviewer would like to thank Lynne Jordan and the Shivers for allowing her to experience a community concert for the first time in forever.
