Marking the company premiere of this 1927 composition, the LA Opera presents Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, based on a play written by ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles in which protagonist Oedipus unknowingly kills his own father and marries his mother. Although the work was originally set in Latin, a narrator describes the action in English throughout the course of the opera, per Stravinsky’s instructions to adapt to the language of the audience.
Starring in the production are tenor Russell Thomas as Oedipus the King and J’Nai Bridges as the Queen (and mother), under the musical direction of James Conlon. The performance also features projected animations created by Manual Cinema, an Emmy Award-winning video production company.
