Death, a three-part operatic work about the Black experience in America, from composer Tyshawn Sorey and filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, draws inspiration from influential Black poet Paul Laurence Dunbar's work of the same name (which is presented in the first act).
Death focuses on the work of two Black artists. The composer himself appears in the second act sharing his inspiration and influence for the piece. In the third act a solo is performed by mezzo soprano Amanda Lynn Bottoms with piano accompaniment by Howard Watkins.
