A spokesperson describes the event as follows:
“...Proust’s Salon: Tracing the Spiral of Time revives the author’s deeply personal notion of time with music of Gabriel Fauré, Florent Schmitt, and Charles Koechlin that might easily have been heard at one of the salon events that Proust and his circle of artists favored. Fauré advocated for the intimacy of chamber music as a way to nurture and express “inner life.” Koechlin, Fauré’s student, proposed a “tower” from which the artist could objectively observe and process the world. Florent Schmitt, who also studied with Fauré, is often considered one of the most fascinating of France's lesser-known classical composers. All regarded the salon as an intimate means to transport composers and listeners to a timeless place of reflection and detachment, where past and present intermingle.
The program includes Charles Koechlin (1867-1950): String Quartet No. 1, Op. 51; Florent Schmitt (1870-1958): Musiques Intimes, Book 2, Op. 29 for solo piano; and Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924): Piano Quartet No. 2, Op. 45. Performing artists include Adam Neiman (piano), Geneva Lewis and Stefan Hersh (violins), Teng Li (viola), and Bion Tsang (cello). Neiman will provide commentary at the beginning of the event, and a French salon-themed intimate reception will follow the performance where audience members and artists can engage in conversations..."
