Gray presents a solo exhibition of paintings from the Estate of Ellen Lanyon, entitled Ellen Lanyon: A Bit of Magic.
The Chicago painter and printmaker, Ellen Lanyon (1926 - 2013), is celebrated for her detailed still-life compositions of fantasy scenes. Her work is often discussed in relation to Surrealism and Magic Realism.
According to a spokesperson for the event, her work is “A reflection of her own private mythology, Lanyon’s juxtapositions of exotic specimens from the natural world with everyday household objects subvert ideas of domesticity and offer mysterious new narratives both playful and sinister.”
The exhibition also features a video of Gray Partner, Valerie Carberry discussing A Bit of Magic. In the video, Carberry reflects on Lanyon’s life and work, citing examples from the exhibition and recounting milestones in the artist’s career.
