Fashion Institute of Technology presents Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion, an exhibition aiming to explore how the rose has influenced fashion. Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion features more than 130 items, ranging from hand-woven and embroidered 18th-century silks to contemporary haute couture pieces. Items include a large group of hats, many of which are displayed for the first time, according to a Fashion Institute of Technology spokesperson. The garments and accessories aim to present themes such as love, beauty, sex, sin, gendered identities, rites of passage, transgression, degradation and death.
“Long associated with love and pleasure, the rose and its thorns can also allude to suffering, purity and transience,” says Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “Drawing on three centuries of fashion, this beautiful exhibition features work by designers from Charles James to Alexander McQueen.”
