Diego and his father live in a small hut in Colombia. With the rainforest as his backyard, Diego spends his days exploring sky-high trees and listening to the sound of melodious morning birds and chirping cicadas. One day, his daily trek directs him to a wooden chair in the middle of the forest, and Diego’s excitement entices him to show his father, who bluntly tells him to return it because it could belong to someone else. After returning the chair to its comfortable spot in the forest, Diego’s curiosity persists and he visits the chair again, only to find the chair has magically grown fifty times its original size. Amazed by this magical chair, Diego invites his father along to see the chair in action. Along the way he learns that the real wonders of life are grander than the chair could ever grow to be.
The Size of Things (El tamaño de las cosas) is a short, live-action film in Spanish with English subtitles. In this writer’s opinion, the film creates a wholesome atmosphere as we watch a father teach his son about the importance of love and appreciation. Even though the two of them don’t own material goods, they have each other and a home that protects them from the pouring rain.
This short film is perfect for viewers who would appreciate a short and sweet film portraying the evolution of a father and son’s relationship. It is also for anyone who wants a glimpse of everyday life in the Colombian rainforest.
