Who doesn’t love doing laundry on a Wednesday night?
You might hop on over to the laundromat inconspicuously located at 5050 N. Clark Street in Andersonville. Unfortunately, you open the door and all the machines are full. It’s suspiciously empty of people though. You ring the desk bell and wait a moment. Slowly, one wall of machines opens and a friendly host ushers you inside. You’ll need to plan your laundry day for another time since we’re about to enjoy a magic show with A PAIGE IN TIME.
Cocktails at the Chicago Magic Lounge
The experience at the Chicago Magic Lounge is fun from start to finish. Going through the hidden entrance is just the start to the speakeasy feel. Art deco furnishings with gold trim and plush couches add to the 1920s vibe. The cocktail list has a wide variety of liquors to suit a variety of tastes and they are, of course, all magic themed.
Before the mainstage show, you might have an opportunity to catch one of the bartender magician’s acts. This particular night, Kaylee performed at the bar with a small set of card tricks and mind reading. She has the crowd laughing as she pulls different bar patrons in to help with her performance from the usual picking a card to guessing guests’ drinks of choice.
The house is announced to be open and those attending the show make their way towards the lobby. And no spoilers here, but another surprise entrance to the main theater is in store as the magic continues.
Sparkles, Sports, and Sleight of Hand
After some fun tableside magic as everyone finds their seats, Paige Thompson takes the stage in a blue gown adorned in a sparkly belt and topped with a rhinestone encrusted blazer. She welcomes us and begins to tell her story walking us through different moments of her life that brought her here.
She begins with a little danger as she places a fish hook in her mouth tied to a piece of string with three other untied strings accompanying it. She asks one audience member to individually pull a string at random. With help from the other members, we yell out string numbers to pull and hope it won’t be the one attached to the hook to prevent severely injuring her.
Though Thompson has performed in large scale venues doing death defying stunts before, the Chicago Magic Lounge simply doesn’t have the space for such grand illusions. Instead, we’re treated to a highlights reel of awe-inspiring moments from her career. She performs tricks inspired by some of these moments including a costume change and blindfolded shoe magic.
She brings her love of sports into the stories leading up to her tricks, as well as a touching moment that she dedicates to her grandmother who helped her along her magician’s journey.
A Weeknight Out with Some Magic
In this writer’s opinion, there is an art to creating a show for a mid-size stage and the cabaret style and sized theater at the Chicago Magic Lounge, helps make A PAIGE IN TIME a good performance of medium illusions. Some of the tricks are magnified with the help of a projector which helps sightlines, but for some tricks that require a close-up view, it became difficult to see when it wasn’t projected on the big screen. If you are used to seeing a daring escape on stage in a 1000 seat theater, or a sleight of hand card trick right under your nose, you too might be kept hoping for the tricks to end with a complete surprise, instead of what feelslike a predictable reveal.
On balance, this is a fun weeknight out if you’re in the neighborhood and looking for an easy and entertaining show with a cocktail in hand.
