A spokesperson describes the event as follows:
Mercedes, Part I, created by acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Modesto “Flako” Jimenez (Taxilandia), transports audiences into the recreated Bushwick home of his cherished grandmother, Mercedes Viñales. Through a blend of documentary elements and interactive installations, this intimate piece invites viewers to explore themes of memory, resilience, and community, capturing Mercedes’ life as an immigrant, her strength in the face of dementia, and the nurturing bonds of family and care.
The installation immerses visitors in Mercedes' world, transforming her story into an emotive exploration of love, loss, and cultural heritage. Featuring a Healing Room gallery, Mercedes, Part I offers a safe, judgment-free space for guests to create their own art, share personal reflections, and engage with mental health resources. Participants are encouraged to contribute to a collective dialogue on memory and wellness, and leave with care packages to foster creativity and support mental health beyond the event.
