Lankum, an Irish music group set to perform at this year’s World Music Festival wants to show Chicagoans real Irish culture. The group is about to release their third studio album -The Livelong Dayand it’s rumored they may be airing some of the new material live in Chicago at this year’s World Music Festival.

(PTP) Many Chicagoans think of the World Music Festival as a way to see and hear the world without a passport. What would you most like Chicagoans to know and appreciate about your culture and how your music is a part of it?
(RP) Well I think many people have a somewhat skewed vision of what Irishness means. We’re very proud of our traditional music and folklore and hopefully people who come to the concert will come away with more of a sense of what it really means to be Irish, both a sense of our past and our present.
How many musicians are in your group and what instruments do they play?
There are four of us, we all sing in harmony and between us we play fiddle, uileann pipes, concertina, guitar, harmonium and Russian accordion. We perform folk and traditional songs as well as self written material.
How did your group come together?
Well two members are brothers, so they’re together from birth really. Myself and Cormac the fiddle player were later to the party and officially formed the band with Daragh and Ian around eight years ago now. We have a mix of backgrounds, with the brothers coming from a more punk & DIY perspective and me and Cormac coming from a traditional music background from an early age.
Is this the first time you are performing in Chicago?
It’s my first time in Chicago, performing or otherwise and I’m really looking forward to seeing a bit of the city. I don’t have any concrete plans on what to see but I’ll ask around for recommendations. I really enjoy just walking around a new city and people watching, it can give you a feel for the place sometimes in a way that tourist attractions can’t.
