Andrew Meneses (AM) of Latin Street Music brings great enthusiasm to teaching Salsa dancing to Chicagoans, which he shares here with readers of Picture This Post (PTP).
(PTP) What is your background in Salsa dancing?
(AM) I started dancing Salsa when I was 15 years old in Puerto Rico. It took me ten years to learn by watching and trial and error on the dance floor. I started teaching and performing back in college at University of Illinois-Champaign. In 1998 I started dancing and teaching professionally, and in 2004 made it a full time career.
Do you perform mainly in Chicago or beyond?
I have performed and taught workshops in Miami, Los Angeles, Washington DC & Montreal, as well as in the Chicagoland surrounding suburbs
Do you teach this type of dance all around Chicago or is this SummerDance unique?
I teach Salsa at my studio Latin Street Music & Dancing in Chicago. We offer over 90 classes per week. I also teach at colleges, elementary schools, private events, weddings and all over the Chicagoland area.
What’s the most challenging part of teaching this type of dance in a setting like SummerDance?
The challenge is to keep people entertained and learning at the same time. I love teaching and opening a new world to newcomers and make them feel that they can dance.
Have you collaborated with this musical group before?
I have collaborated with this group many times. I have produced concerts with them, and they are the best at the style of Salsa they play.
What other gigs (performance or teaching) do you have on your calendar?
I produce Salsa nights every Wednesday at Vintage Lounge and every Thursday at Reverie. I will be back at Summer Dance on July 28th for a full 100% Bachata afternoon, with the entertainment we feature every Thursday at Reverie, one of the best and most popular Latin Night Clubs in Chicago.
